Yankees game 96: A-Bomb’s and Murphy’s law

New York Yankees 8 – Minnesota Twins 5.

Murphy’s law, if anything can go wrong, it will. A John Ryan Murphy home run and three more from Alex Rodriguez, led to an unraveling by the Twins and a resurgence by the Yanks. After being outscored 15-1 through the first 12 frames of this series, the Yankees bounced back from a 10-1 thrashing Friday, with a targeting bombing attack and an 8-5 victory Saturday.

It was a shaky outing from CC Sabathia in the early going, as Sabathia surrendered a two-run shot to Aaron Hicks in the first frame and a three-run jolt to Torii Hunter in the third inning, placing the Yankees in a 5-0 deficit. Yet the Yankees would chip away but not with a chisel but a bag of hammers.

With the Yanks being held hit less and mired in a 5-0 hole. Al from Miami jumped the Bombers off the mat. On a 2-0 delivery from Tommy Milone, A-Rod swatted a solo shot to left for home run 21 on the year, making it 5-1 in the fourth.

As Sabathia continued to gut it out into the sixth, Adam Warren came on with two down and the bases loaded. Warren proved to be the unsung hero, freezing Hicks to retire the side and prompting Twins skipper Paul Molitor to argue his way to an early shower. In any event, the Yankees stayed within striking distance at 5-1.

Jumping to the seventh, Chris Young set the table, lining a double off the glove of third baseman Eduardo Escobar. Then, A-Rod jumped on a 1-1 offering from Milone. Rodriguez’s two-run tater to left center, pulled the Yanks within two at 5-3. It was A-rod’s second of the contest and number 22 on the season.

Ensuing batter Mark Teixeira rocked a double to center, effectively chasing Milone from the contest. Following a pitching change, Carlos Beltran lined out to center against Brian Duensing but some heads up base running saw Tex move up to third. Chase Headley followed suit with a sac fly to center, plating Tex and inching the Yanks within one at 5-4.

Fast forward to the ninth, A-Rod went deep yet again, because of course he did. Not wasting any time, Al smacked the first pitch he saw from Glen Perkins to dead center, knotting the game at five. A-Rod’s third of the game and number 23 on the campaign, put the Yanks back in business.

Oh but the navy blue bomberoo wasn’t done yet. Tex singled to left to keep the rally going. Then some hustle by Beltran and a favorable replay, erased a double play. A single to center by Headley set up runners at the corners for Murphy.

With two on and one down, Murphy drilled his first of the season, a three-run smash to right center off Perkins, for his first of the season, posting the Yanks to an 8-5 advantage.

In the home half of the ninth, Andrew Miller slammed the door and notched save number 23 on the season.
