Yankees Game 97: Beat Up And Defeated

New York Yankees 2 — Seattle Mariners 4

Three Yankees were hit by pitches to add to the 4-2 loss to the Seattle Mariners.

Freddy Garcia went a strong 7.1 innings in a duel with Mariners ace Felix Hernandez. Mariners outfielder Michael Saunders put the Mariners on the board early with a solo home run in the 1st inning. A two-run 3rd inning was highlighted by a run-scoring single by former Yankee Jesus Montero on a base hit to the opposite field in front of Ichiro. After 3 pitching changes in the 8th inning, Boone Logan allowed his inherited runner to score on an awkward base hit by Mariners third baseman, Kyle Seager.

Felix Hernandez is one of the best pitchers in all of baseball. In 7.1 innings, he surrendered just 2 runs on 4 hits but it is notable that he hit three Yankee batters. Hernandez hit former teammate Ichiro Suzuki, shortstop Derek Jeter, and third baseman Alex Rodriguez. Only Alex Rodriguez would be removed from the game. Curtis Granderson got the Yankees on the board early with a solo home run in the 1st inning. The Yankees had a pair of large opportunities to get to the ace of the Mariners staff. The first was in the 4th inning when two singles and a walk would have the bases loaded with just one out. A strikeout and a fly out would end this rally without a single run scoring. Then in the 8th inning, two hit batters and a single produced another bases-loaded opportunity but only a Mark Teixeira sacrifice fly produced a run as the Yankees did not seize the moment and make the most of it.
