Yankees Game 98: Nix Comes Through Big

New York Yankees 5 — Seattle Mariners 2

Jayson Nix came up in the 8th and brought in 3 in today’s 5-2 win over the Seattle Mariners.

Over 5 innings, Ivan Nova gave up just 2 hits but his outing was shorter than he would have liked because he would also walk 6 with his 107 pitches. The 2 runs that Nova allowed were on a bases-loaded walk and a ground out in the 1st. The Mariners would not have another hit until the 9th inning. David Phelps provided 1.1 innings of perfect baseball with two strikeouts as he continues to be a reliable presence in the bullpen and earned the win today. David Robertson pitched a solid 8th inning with two strikeouts. Rafael Soriano would give up one hit and strikeout one to get his 26th save of the season.

Batting in a spot in the lineup he was once very familiar with, Derek Jeter made the most of his return to the two spot in the order. Batting behind recently acquired Ichiro Suzuki, the Yankees captain had 3 hits including 1st inning solo home run. Jeter would also start the eventual comeback in the 8th inning but not in a way he would have likely preferred as he was hit by a pitch for the second time in two days. Two more singles would load the bases and after a pop out, pinch hitter Jayson Nix would come through. One of the two organizational replacements for the injured Alex Rodriguez would hit a bases-clearing double to put the Yankees ahead on what would be a four-run 8th inning. The Yankees went 2-5 on this West Coast road trip.
