Yankees game 99: Offense Erupts for 21 in Texas

New York Yankees 21 – Texas Rangers 5

The Yankees erupted in tonight’s blowout victory.

After Martin Perez retired the Yankees in the first inning, Chris Capuano took the mound in a regrettable spot start. Capuano started the game with a walk. After retiring the next two outs, Capuano lost the strike zone when he walked Prince Fielder to put two on base. Elvis Andrus hit a single to center field and the Rangers were on the board. After the single, Mitch Moreland walked to load the bases. Still with two outs, Ryan Rua hit a single to left, scoring two runs. Shin-Soo Choo followed with a double to right field, scoring another run. A pair of walks, including one with the bases loaded, was the end of the night for Capuano. Diego Moreno got the last out of the inning, but more to come on him later.

In 2/3 of an inning, Chris Capuano allowed five runs on three hits and five walks. He struck out none and needed 42 pitches, 18 for strikes.

After falling behind 5-0 early, Chris Young started the second inning with a double to left field. Chase Headley quickly helped plate the Yankees’ first run with a single to center field. John Ryan Murphy hit a single to put two on base. Didi Gregorius loaded the bases the hard way when he was hit by a pitch. Brendan Ryan hit a ground ball to the right of second base where Rougned Odor lost track of the ball as it got by him, for a two-run double. Jacoby Ellsbury hit a single to center field for another run and the Yankees were within one. Brett Gardner joined in the offense with a single, tying the game at 5. Alex Rodriguez followed with a double to deep left field, just missing a home run but settled for the sixth run of the inning, giving the Yankees the lead.

In one inning, Martin Perez allowed eight runs on seven hits with no walks and one strikeout.

Mark Teixeira became the first out of the inning when he struck out against Wandy Rodriguez. Chris Young walked and Chase Headley came up again, hitting a single to left field and scoring the seventh run of the second inning. With two outs, Didi Gregorius delivered the big hit of the inning, a bases-loaded triple to left center field, putting the Yankees ahead by five. Brendan Ryan was the last contributor of the inning when he hit a double to left field for the 11th run of the inning. I repeat, 11 runs in the inning.

In the second inning, the Yankees scored 11 runs on 10 hits and none were a home run. Every Yankee except for Teixeira contributed to the huge inning.

The Yankees offense kept the foot on the gas pedal in the third inning. Brett Gardner led off the third inning with a single. Alex Rodriguez followed with a single to put runners on the corners. Mark Teixeira walked to load the bases and Chris Young continues tearing up left-handed pitching. Chris Young hit a grand slam to left field, extending the Yankees lead to 15-5.

While the Yankees plated 15 unanswered runs, Diego Moreno was dealing.

Following the five-run first inning, Moreno retired eight of the next nine batters with one reaching on a walk. The Yankees scored one run in the fourth on an error by Andrus to make it 16 but Moreno kept dominating the Rangers out of the bullpen. Moreno retired the next 10 batters following the walk and gave the Yankees a huge lift after a tremendous letdown in the spot start.

In 5 1/3 scoreless innings, Diego Moreno allowed no hits while walking one and striking out five. Remarkable relief outing by the 28-year-old Moreno.

After being held off the scoreboard in the fifth inning, the Yankees got it going in the sixth inning. Against relief pitcher Spencer Patton, Brett Gardner walked. After the first out, Mark Teixeira was hit on the top of the right foot to put two on base. Chris Young came short of his second home run of the night but settled for a run-scoring double, his career-high fifth run batted in. John Ryan Murphy made it a 19-5 game with a two-run single to right field as the game was well in control.

In the ninth inning, infielder Adam Rosales took the mound for the Rangers and after the second catcher’s interference on a Jacoby Ellsbury at-bat, from the second Rangers catcher, Brett Gardner busted the 20-run barrier. Gardner hit a two-run home run to right field, giving the Yankees 21 runs on the night.

Following the hitless relief appearance by Moreno, Adam Warren provided three hitless innings as well. Three innings in relief to finish the game means Adam Warren got the save with a 16-run lead.

The bottom of the lineup, Chase Headley, John Ryan Murphy, Didi Gregorius and Brendan Ryan, combined for six runs scored and batted in 10 runs. Brett Gardner was walked three times tonight and crossed home plate five times. The lineup saw contributions from every starter. Unbelievable team win.
