Yankees Spring Training Game 10: Chapman, Miller struggle in home loss

Toronto Blue Jays 11 – New York Yankees 4

In the home edition of today’s split squad, the Yankees hosted the Toronto Blue Jays.

Nathan Eovaldi was tabbed with the start today and he pitched two perfect innings, allowing no hits, walks or runs while not striking out anyone either. Working quick and efficient huh, Nate?

After two innings, the game was scoreless and the elite relievers that Yankees fans are excited about were featured at home.

Andrew Miller came on for the third inning and had a difficult inning of work.

After getting a ground out, Darrell Ceciliani and Ryan Goins got on base with a pair of singles. A third single in the inning by Kevin Pillar loaded the bases and Josh Donaldson cashed in with a two-run single to left field to put the Blue Jays ahead by two. Miller settled down to strike out Jose Bautista looking and Troy Tulowitzki swinging.

Carlos Beltran and Alex Rodriguez each brought home a run in the third inning to tie the game at two. The little guy, Jonathan Diaz, showed big pop when he hit a two-run home run in the fourth inning to give the Yankees the lead.

Dellin Betances got the fourth inning and his inning went smoothly thanks to a hero’s dive by center fielder Ben Gamel.

Aroldis Chapman made his debut as a Yankee in the fifth inning and it was not the impression he wanted to make. The flame-throwing lefty started the inning by striking out Ceciliani but control eluded him when he hit Ryan Goins with a pitch. After a walk, Chapman got the secound out but proceeded to hit Jose Bautista with a foot-seeking slider. Troy Tulowitzki walked with the bases loaded to reduce the Yankees lead to one.

In 2/3 of an inning, Aroldis Chapman hit two batters, walked two batters and allowed a run while striking out one. Control of his fiery arsenal was absent today.

Diego Moreno helped Chapman out of his difficult inning and got an inning of work for himself in the sixth.

After getting the first out, Russell Martin reached base with an infield single and a walk put Moreno in hot water. David Adams plated the tying run with a ground-rule double in the right field corner. Domonic Brown reached first on a throwing error by second baseman Jonathan Diaz and Andy Burns brought them all home with a three-run home run to left field, extending the Jays’ one-run lead to four.

Vinnie Pestano‘s bid for a bullpen spot continued to look bleak when he gave up a single, triple and double in the eighth inning. One more Blue Jays run scored in the ninth inning as the Yankees took the loss in the home half of today’s split squad.
