Yankees Spring Training Game 13: Errors abound in sloppy loss

Philadelphia Phillies 3 – New York Yankees 0

The Yankees hosted the Philadelphia Phillies today but lacked some stability in the field.

CC Sabathia started today’s game and looked to be in control after getting the first two outs but the first of many Yankees errors extended the inning. On a soft ground ball by Maikel Franco between the mound and the plate, Sabathia could not come up with the ball, giving Ryan Howard an opportunity in the first inning. The Phillies’ designated hitter of the day made the most of the opportunity with a ringing double to left field that scored Franco to put the Phillies ahead early.

In the second inning, Sabathia gave up a single before getting the first out. On a line drive to left field that scored a run, Aaron Hicks fielded the ball but an errant throw to second allowed the batter, Nick Williams to advance to third and charged the Yankees with their second error of the game. With two outs, the Phillies plated another run and the Yankees committed their third error of the game when second baseman Starlin Castro threw it away to put runners on the corners after a single. Sabathia hit one more batter to end his day with the bases loaded. Dellin Betances finished off the inning with a strikeout and finished off the poor line for CC.

In 1 2/3 innings, CC Sabathia surrendered three runs, two earned, on five hits with one walk and one strikeout.

Andrew Miller pitched in the third inning and gave up a double but did not let him come around to score.

Michael Pineda came on for the fourth inning and worked around a single and a walk to pitch a scoreless inning. He stayed on to retire six in a row to retire nine consecutive overall. In three innings, Pineda allowed one hit and one walk but struck out four in a very strong appearance.

The Yankees first real threat from the offense came in the fifth inning when Chase Headley and Starlin Castro reached base with a pair of singles but they were stranded on a pair of fly outs.

Aroldis Chapman came on for the seventh inning and his second appearance this Spring, looking for a smoother outing than his first one. The hard-throwing lefty mixed it up today as he got strikeouts on his offspeed pitch, slider and of course, his blazing fastball. Mixed in that glory was a walk and error but a much improved outing from the Yankees’ closer.

In the eighth inning, the Yankees were tagged with a difficult fifth team error when a deep fly ball to center field hit off the top of center fielder Dustin Fowler‘s glove.

The Yankees got five hits but committed as many errors.
