Yankees Spring Training Game 15: Walk-Off Sac Fly

Washington Nationals 3 — New York Yankees 4 (10 innings)

No hits factored into the walk-off sacrifice fly that sent the Yankees fans home happy with the 4-3 win in 10 innings. A walk by Justin Maxwell, an error, and a sacrifice fly by Brandon Laird led to the run needed to win in today’s game.

CC Sabathia started today’s game and in 3 innings of work, he gave up 3 runs on 6 hits, 1 walk, and 2 strikeouts. With the news of Andy Pettitte coming out of retirement, Phil Hughes needed a strong outing today to continue presenting a good reason to remain with the team and he did just that. The 25-year old right-handed pitcher had 4 shutout innings with 3 hits and 3 strikeouts in his appearance today. Rafael Soriano & Cesar Cabral had perfect innings of work, including 2 strikeouts for Cabral.

With one on, Alex Rodriguez pulled a 0-1 pitch to left field when the Yankees trailed 3-1 in the 5th inning and tied the game in an instant. Curtis Granderson got an infield single and Robinson Cano drove him in with a run-scoring double to left to put the Yankees on the board earlier in the 1st inning.

Win – Chase Whitley (1-0)

Loss – Atahualpa Severino (0-1)
