With the news of Andy Pettitte coming out of retirement, Phil Hughes needed a strong outing today to continue presenting a good reason to remain with the team and he did just that. The 25-year old right-handed pitcher had 4 shutout innings with 3 hits and 3 strikeouts in his appearance today. Rafael Soriano & Cesar Cabral had perfect innings of work, including 2 strikeouts for Cabral.
With one on, Alex Rodriguez pulled a 0-1 pitch to left field when the Yankees trailed 3-1 in the 5th inning and tied the game in an instant. Curtis Granderson got an infield single and Robinson Cano drove him in with a run-scoring double to left to put the Yankees on the board earlier in the 1st inning.
