Yankees Spring Training Game 18: Offensive Eruption

Pittsburgh Pirates 3 — New York Yankees 10

In a 5-run 4th inning, the Yankees batted around to make the lead insurmountable in tonight’s 10-3 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Alex Rodriguez drove in one run in the 3rd inning and a two-run single in the big 4th inning. Curtis Granderson supplied runs by getting on base in all four of his plate appearances. He drew two walks and got a single and a double. He came around 3 of the 4 times he reached base. Justin Maxwell drove in 2 runs after replacing Nick Swisher, who experienced some tightness in his right groin.

Michael Pineda made his fourth start of this Spring. Pineda went 3 innings with 3 hits, 2 runs (on Andrew McCutchen’s two-run home run in the 1st), 1 walk and 5 strikeouts. The notable fact about tonight’s start was that he reached 94 mph on his fastball. Many were throwing up red flags as Pineda’s velocity was not up to the speeds that we had been told about (mid-to-upper 90’s). Mariano Rivera pitched another perfect inning with 9 pitches, 8 for strikes.

Win – Mariano Rivera (2-0)

Loss – Erik Bedard (0-1)
