Yankees Spring Training Game 2: An A-Bomb and a bad bullpen

Philadelphia Phillies 13 – New York Yankees 4

Hardly any positives to take from a defeat with that score but the lone bright spot shined over the left field wall.

Ivan Nova made his Spring debut and struggled out of the gate. Ivan Nova surrendered a pair of hits, the second a run-scoring single by Darin Ruf. Ultimately, in two innings, Nova allowed one run on two hits while striking out one. A good outing this early in Spring as he continues to build up and compete for a spot in the rotation.

While Ivan Nova had a successful debut, the Yankees’ relievers not named Chapman, Miller and Betances have yet to be determined. Today’s game with the Philadelphia Phillies could not put management at ease. Following another two innings of one-run baseball by Diego Moreno, a number of bullpen candidates auditioned and will look forward to their next outing.

Starting the fifth inning, Jacob Lindgren took the mound but could not locate the strike zone. The young lefty started the game with a pair of walks. His first out was given to him on a sacrifice before he hit a batter to load the bases. Lindgren walked one more batter to bring in the Phillies’ third run of the game before he was removed. Anthony Swarzak came in and gave up a pair of hits in the inning to wrap up Lindgren’s Spring debut in an ugly bow.

In 1/3 of an inning, Jacob Lindgren surrendered four runs without a hit but walked three and hit one batter.

Swarzak gave up a run in the sixth inning before James Pazos came in with one out in the inning. Anthony Swarzak surrendered two runs on four hits in his inning of work. James Pazos did not fair well in today’s outing either. In 2/3 of an inning, he surrendered three runs on two hits and one walk without a strikeout.

The lone standout from the projected candidates for the Yankees bullpen this year was Branden Pinder, who pitched a perfect inning with two strikeouts.

To the joy of many Yankees fans, Alex Rodriguez made noise with his first swing of the Spring. In the first inning with one on base, the Yankees’ designated hitter went deep to left field for a two-run home run. Mark Teixeira and Chase Headley each got a hit today. Gary Sanchez was hitless today but exhibited a good eye and patience with a pair of walks.

Win – Alec Asher
