Yankees Spring Training Game 23: Lack of relief in walk-off defeat

New York Yankees 10 – Baltimore Orioles 11 (10 innings)

The Yankees paid a visit to the Baltimore Orioles and the Yankees could not find relief in today’s see-saw affair.

Ivan Nova started today’s game as he continues his audition for a possible spot in the starting rotation. After a scoreless first inning, the offense got behind him. With two outs and two on via walks, Chris Denorfia made the most of the inning by taking Orioles’ starter Chris Tillman deep for a three-run home run.

After receiving the lead, a shut down inning could have been a good positive for Nova but he faltered slightly in the second. After getting the first out, Nova surrendered a solo home run to Mark Trumbo to cut the Yankees led down to two. The offense continued to backup their starter when Brett Gardner and Didi Gregorius led off the third inning with a single and a double to put two in scoring position. One of the hotter bats on the roster, Starlin Castro, came up and came through with a sacrifice fly to bring home Gardner, extending the lead to three. Chase Headley hit a single to right field, scoring Gregorius and putting the Yankees ahead by four.

With a four-run lead, Ivan Nova continued to struggle. After a leadoff single, catcher Caleb Joseph took Nova deep for a two-run home run to bring the Yankees lead down to two. The long ball bug bit Nova one more time, this time in the fourth inning. After a one-out walk, J.J. Hardy hit a two-run home run to left field that tied the game at five after four innings.

Nova got the first two outs of the fifth inning before he issued a pair of walks. Chris Davis drilled a single that stayed in the infield but a late Nova to first base and a wide throw by Starlin Castro allowed a go-ahead run to score, ending Nova’s difficult start.

In 4 2/3 innings, Ivan Nova allowed six runs, five earned, on five hits and three walks while striking out five. Three of the five hits were home runs.

In relief, Johnny Barbato provided 1 1/3 shutout innings as he kept the deficit at one. Unfortunately for the Yankees, Barbato was one of the five relievers that provided a scoreless appearance.

In the seventh inning, outfielder Cesar Puello put the Yankees in a strong position to makeup the deficit with a double. Brett Gardner followed with a triple that scored Puello and tied the game at six. Infielder Ronald Torreyes brought home the go-ahead run to retrieve the lead yet again.

Nick Goody entered the game but gave up a one-out solo home run to Manny Machado to tie the game at seven. The Yankees reclaimed the lead in the eighth inning and got a scoreless inning from James Pazos. The Yankees turned to Nick Rumbelow in the ninth inning, looking to wrap up this back-and-forth game. Unfortunately, Rumbelow surrendered a solo home run to Nolan Reimold that tied the game at eight…again. Rumbelow walked two in the inning after the home run but managed to escape with the game tied as the game dragged on into an extra inning.

The Yankees put two runs on the board in the top of the 10th inning but the back-and-forth flow of this game was not contained to nine innings. Experimenting with Rob Refsnyder at third base had a bad trial today as a throwing error allowed the first batter to reach. A bad hop caught Refsnyder just by the eye for the second error in as many batters and forced the third baseman to exit the game. A walk loaded the bases and a pair of singles finished off the Yankees when Garabez Rosa walked off with a single to center field.
