Yankees Spring Training Game 24: Tied At 1

Detroit Tigers 1 — New York Yankees 1 (10 innings)

Michael Pineda lasted 5 innings, his longest Spring outing as a Yankee, and gave up the only run for the Yankees in the 1-1 tie with the Detroit Tigers this afternoon.

In Pineda’s 5 innings of work, he topped out at 94 mph for those who were initially alarmed by his lack of velocity. He gave up 1 run on 5 hits with 2 walks and 4 strikeouts. Mariano Rivera made another Spring appearance and gave up a double and threw a wild pitch but still threw a scoreless inning. Rafael Soriano followed with a perfect inning of work. David Robertson made his return from the odd injury that he suffered and also had a scoreless inning of work. Manny Delcarmen and Clay Rapada each pitched a scoreless inning of work to finish off the game at a tie.

Derek Jeter, who had missed several games with a calf injury, led off the bottom of the 1st inning with a home run to right field. His next at-bat was a double he pulled to left field. These two extra-base hits were his first two for the Spring. In the 7th inning, the Yankees suffered a scare when Alex Rodriguez was hit in the side by a Bryan Villarreal pitch and he immediately left the game but it doesn’t appear to be serious. There was clearly not much offense to discuss but Mark Teixeira and Eduardo Nunez each got a double but none of them came around to score.
