Yankees Spring Training Game 29: Homers at home cue defeat

St. Louis Cardinals 9 – New York Yankees 1

For the home edition of today’s split squad, the Yankees hosted the St. Louis Cardinals in the final tune up before officially ending Spring Training.

After a scoreless first inning, Michael Pineda hit a few bumps in the road. In the second inning with two outs, Stephen Piscotty hit a deep solo home run to left field to put the Yankees in an early deficit. The long ball hurt Pineda yet again in the fourth inning. Brandon Moss took Pineda deep and Piscotty went deep for the second time today to put the Cardinals ahead by three.

In the fifth inning, Jeremy Hazelbaker went deep with two on and two out for a three-run home run. In five innings, Michael Pineda allowed six runs on seven hits without a walk and four strikeouts. Of the seven hits, four were home runs. Certainly not the outing Pineda wanted to finish Spring Training with.

After a scoreless inning by Aroldis Chapman, reliever Anthony Swarzak pitched in the seventh inning. With one on and one out, Tommy Pham took Swarzak deep to left field to extend the Cardinals’ lead to eight. Three singles brought home one more run and the Cardinals were ahead by nine.

The Yankees avoided the shutout with a run on a sacrifice fly in the eighth inning but it was little solace in a dreadful finale to Spring Training.

Win – Mike Leake
