Yankees Spring Training Game 30: Road team wrecked by 5 HR day

New York Yankees 4 – Detroit Tigers 10

As Spring Training wraps up, the road half of today’s split squad got smashed by the tuned up Detroit Tigers.

Formerly a member of the Tigers organization, Chad Green started for the road squad and had a rough first inning. Green got the first two outs before Miguel Cabrera hit a double. Victor Martinez followed with a long ball, a two-run home run to give the Tigers an early lead. J.D. Martinez went back-to-back with Victor with a solo home run, extending the Tigers lead to three.

In the third inning, the Tigers added a run on a fly ball that featured an errant throw by outfielder Aaron Judge, extending the Tigers lead to four.

The Yankees got some offense from members of the Opening Day roster as Starlin Castro led off the fourth inning with a single. Opening Day backup catcher Austin Romine showed some pop when he took reliever Lendy Castillo deep for a two-run home run.

Despite putting two runs on the board, the Tigers offense remained relentless.

J.D. Martinez took Chad Green deep for a second time today, his second home run of the game. In the fifth inning, Ian Kinsler also took Chad Green deep, putting the Tigers back ahead by four.

Former Met Bobby Parnell took the mound for the Tigers in the sixth inning and the Yankees managed to get on the board. The Yankees loaded the bases on three one-out singles before Parnell uncorked a wild pitch to bring home a Yankees run. Chris Parmelee hit a single to bring home another run, bringing the Yankees within two.

Reliever Tyler Webb got through 1 2/3 scoreless but his second full inning of work, the seventh inning, got rough for the lefty. After giving up a leadoff triple, Ian Kinsler hit a sacrifice fly to score a run. After a double from Justin Upton, Miguel Cabrera hit a single to put the Tigers back ahead by four. Webb got one more out before Conor Mullee came in for relief. Unfortunately, J.D. Martinez made it a day to remember when he hit his third home run of the day.

The Yankees got two runs in the ninth inning but they fell short in today’s road loss.

Win – Logan Kensing
