Boston Red Sox 4 – New York Yankees 6
The Yankees got to see a glimpse into their future as the Baby Bombers made an impact in a big way.
With Tyler Cloyd starting, Mookie Betts started the game hot with a triple. He scored on a single by Brock Holt but Cloyd settled down to generate a double play and keep the damage to one.
Chasen Shreve followed with a scoreless inning of work and a highly-touted Baby Bomber got the Yankees on the board with pop.
Leading off the third inning, shortstop Jorge Mateo hit it deep to left field where he got his triple earlier this spring. Instead, it went over the wall and Mateo got his first home run of the spring to tie the game.
The veterans followed as Carlos Beltran and Alex Rodriguez reached base with a pair of singles. Mark Teixeira came through with a run-scoring single, bringing home Beltran and giving the Yankees the lead.
Nick Rumbelow pitched a scoreless inning and an important piece in any potential success for the Yankees got his bat warmed up.
Jacoby Ellsbury led off the fifth inning with a triple and Carlos Beltran brought him in with a ground out to extend the Yankees lead. Meanwhile, Tyler Olson and Johnny Barbato pitched a scoreless inning each, including two strikeouts for Barbato.
In the seventh inning, another touted Baby Bomber showed off his bat when Aaron Judge stepped to the plate. Rob Refsnyder and Ronald Torreyes started the seventh with a pair of singles to bring up the Yankees right fielder. Going the other way, Judge put his power on display when his home run went over the right field wall. The three-run home run extended the Yankees lead to 6-1.
Until the eighth inning, the Yankees retired 14 in a row. Reliever Mark Montgomery got the first out in the eighth inning before things took a turn for the worse. Left fielder Brennan Boesch took Montgomery deep for a solo home run. He got the next two outs but the third out was not recorded thanks to passed ball on strike three, allowing the batter to reach and extending the inning. Center fielder Ryan LaMarre made the most of the at-bat with a runner on when he deposited a two-run home run over the wall to bring the Red Sox within two.
Montgomery finished off the eighth inning and reliever Nick Goody returned things to normal by pitching a perfect ninth inning, ending the game and securing a win that Baby Bombers Judge and Mateo shined in.
