Yankees Spring Training Game 5: Kuroda’s Debut

Tampa Bay Rays 4 — New York Yankees 0

Hiroki Kuroda made his Yankees Spring Training debut in today’s 4-0 losing effort against the Tampa Bay Rays. Despite giving up 3 runs on 3 hits in 2 innings of work, there is no cause for alarm. Like CC Sabathia, the 37-year old starting pitcher formerly with the Los Angeles Dodgers has a spot on the starting rotation and is getting work in to prepare for the season. Rafael Soriano made an appearance in today’s game following Kuroda and pitched a scoreless inning despite allowing 1 hit and 1 walk while striking out 2 with help from the defense of Robinson Cano. Other familiar relievers that will likely be a part of the roster in the upcoming season that appeared in today’s game were Cory Wade and Boone Logan; each throwing a scoreless inning.

The Yankees offense struggled with Tampa Bay’s pitching. James Shields started for the Rays and threw 2 perfect innings with 2 strikeouts. The lineup managed just one extra base hit, a double by Jose Gil in the 8th inning.

Win – James Shields (1-0)

Loss – Hiroki Kuroda (0-1)
