Yankees Spring Training Game 6: Pitcher’s duel ends in defeat

Houston Astros 1 — New York Yankees 0

When the Houston Astros come visit the Yankees, pitching is the name of the game.

For the Yankees, Michael Pineda got the start and looked sharp, striking out three and allowing two hits in his two innings of work. Following Pineda was Luis Severino, looking to rebound from the first game of the Spring, in which he gave up a grand slam. In this appearance, Severino followed Pineda and did him one better. He lasted three innings and struck out three while allowing two hits as he prepares for the season.

With the starting pitchers shined through five innings, it was time for some relievers to get their work in.

Andrew Miller made his Spring debut and pitched a scoreless inning with one strikeout, one walk and one hit. Dellin Betances makes up the second of the bullpen trio but drew the bad timing of the game. In the seventh inning, Betances struck out the first batter but back-to-back doubles by Max Stassi and Andrew Aplin scored the lone run of the game. Vinnie Pestano and Jacob Lindgren followed Betances with a perfect inning of work each as they make their bid for a spot in the major league bullpen.

For the Yankees offense, Brian McCann was the only batter with more than one hit. Carlos Beltran and Chris Parmelee each hit a double in today’s game but ultimately they did not find the hit needed to plate any runs.

Win – Cesar Valdez

Loss – Dellin Betances

Save – Juan Minaya
