Yankees Spring Training Game 7: Garcia’s Solid Outing

Atlanta Braves 0 — New York Yankees 3

After 2 games where the offense was hard to find, the Yankees offense got enough runs on the scoreboard for a 3-0 victory over the Atlanta Braves. The Yankees got the first run with an opposite field double by Nick Swisher that drove in Derek Jeter. A sacrifice fly by Robinson Cano and a run-scoring single by Melky Mesa in the game accounted for the other 2 runs as this was more than enough thanks to stellar pitching by the team.

Freddy Garcia started in today’s game and had the Atlanta Braves off balance with the breaking balls and soft stuff that he is now known for. The veteran contending for the 5th spot on the rotation went 3 scoreless innings of 1-hit baseball with 1 walk and 2 strikeouts. Many of the Braves hitters could not make solid contact with the breaking balls that Garcia pitched and it led to many easy outs. Rafael Soriano pitched a perfect inning of baseball and Manny Banuelos was impressive in his 2 scoreless innings of work, just 2 hits and 3 strikeouts with no walks, an impressive number for a pitcher that is known for some times of wildness.

I believe that if Garcia continues to display these effective and economic outings, the 5th spot in the rotation will be his unless Phil Hughes begins to show something noteworthy.

Win – Freddy Garcia (1-0)

Loss – Julio Teheran (0-1)
