Yankees Wild Card game: Keuchel, Astros silence Yankees bats

Houston Astros 3 – New York Yankees 0

In a win or go home game, the Astros’ Dallas Keuchel dominated.

Masahiro Tanaka and Dallas Keuchel pitched a scoreless first inning with a full house in an uproar with every two strike pitch. The Yankees threatened with a walk to Chris Young but it did not amount to anything. In the second inning, Colby Rasmus jumped on the first pitch fastball from Tanaka and took it deep to right field for a solo home run. The Astros loaded the bases with a single and a pair of walks but a ground out ended the tremendous threat.

The Yankees got their first hit when Gregory Bird hit a single to right field but it came with two outs in the second inning and a ground out by Rob Refsnyder ended the inning.

Tanaka contained the Astros until the fifth inning when Carlos Gomez delivered a deep home run to left field, expanding the lead to two. A one-out walk to Chris Carter did not amount to anything thanks to a double play started by Bird.

In five innings, Masahiro Tanaka allowed two runs on four hits with three walks and three strikeouts. The two runs came on a pair of solo home runs.

In the sixth inning, the Yankees started to rally when Didi Gregorius led off with a single. One out later, the runner at first was replaced when the Astros tried to turn a double play but only got Gregorius as Chris Young reached base. Carlos Beltran hit a single to center field to put the tying run on the bases but Alex Rodriguez flew out to center field on the first pitch, quickly ending the threat.

Dallas Keuchel went six shutout innings and scattered three hits.

Relievers Tony Sipp and Will Harris pitched a pair of scoreless innings to bring it to the Astros’ closer.

With a three-run lead after a run-scoring single by Jose Altuve, Luke Gregerson got the ninth inning and set the Yankees down in order, ending the Yankees season and a bid for more postseason baseball.
