Yankees win in Stanton’s return to Miami

MIAMI — In one of the weirdest games of this season so far, the Yankees were able to pull one out in extra innings against Miami, 2-1, at Marlins Park.

Pitching dominated in this one, with both teams limiting the other in terms of offense.

Masahiro Tanaka started for New York and went six innings and gave up just a run on four hits. The lone run was an Austin Dean solo shot in the fifth inning that tied the game at one.

The Bombers had initially taken the lead in the fourth, when Neil Walker drove in Miguel Andujar with a single off of Pablo Lopez. The Marlins starter also went six innings and gave up just a run.

With the game tied at one, however, Miami its fair share of chances to walk the game off.

In the ninth, Chad Green intentionally walked Starlin Castro to load the bases with just one out. The righty, though, was able to strikeout Dean and induce a JT Riddle force out to end the threat.

Two innings later, it was A.J. Cole‘s turn to keep Yankee fans on their toes. After allowing the first two Marlin batters on base, he also walked Castro to load the bases, but this time with no outs.

With things looking bleek, however, Cole turned it up and first got Yadiel Rivera out on a force play at the plate. Then, with the bases still loaded, JT Riddle struckout.

Lastly, Cole got Magneuris Sierra to pop out in foul territory to end the threat and get the Yankees to the 12th inning.

Finally, the Yankees would not waste this opportunity as Miguel Andujar hit a go-ahead sacrifice fly, with the bases loaded, to drive in Kyla Higashioka and give his team a 2-1 lead late.

While all things were looking good, with Aroldis Chapman still available, the lefty suddenly got taken out of the game after apparent knee soreness was bothering him in this appearance.

With David Robertson also unavailable, Aaron Boone turned to Tommy Kahnle to get the game’s last three outs. The righty then delivered with a clean inning, which ended with Isaac Galloway getting thrown out by the Yankee catcher to end the ballgame.

This game also meant a lot to Giancarlo Stanton, who returned to Miami for the first time since his offseason trade to New York. He went 2 for 6, including a single in his first at-bat.

This was a big win for the Yankees, who are now just eight games behind the Red Sox. New York will need to continue taking advantage of a favorable schedule if they hope to catch Boston at the top of the American League East standings.

The Yankees hope to complete the sweep tomorrow, as Lance Lynn takes the mound against Trevor Richards.
