Brendan Ryan placed on DL

The nightmare season continues for Brendan Ryan, who was placed on the 15-day disabled list this afternoon with what’s being called a “right thoracic strain” (upper back). The move opens up a spot for the returning Ivan Nova, but the team has yet to announce a move for the 40-man roster.

Ryan has played in just six games this season, going 4-for-13 (.308) with two RBI. He missed the first two months of the season with various injuries, which he suffered in spring training. Ryan was expected to platoon with Didi Gregorius at shortstop coming into the season.

With Stephen Drew on paternity leave, the Yankees have no real backup at shortstop for Wednesday”s game.
