Injury Update: Mason Williams

New York Yankees outfielder Mason Williams has been sidelined since June 19 due to a right shoulder injury. On Wednesday, Williams hit a setback as he tries to rehab the injury.

The 23-year-old experienced discomfort while throwing, so the team has decided to give him a few days off to see if it helps the injury get better. Manager Joe Girardi doesn’t think that Williams will need surgery, as he is hopeful that a few days off will help get Williams back on the right track.

Williams, who was selected in the fourth round of the 2010 draft by the Yankees, has appeared in 21 games with the big league club this season. He posted a slash line of .286/.318/.890 as he helped fill the void left when Jacoby Ellsbury was on the disabled list.

With Ellsbury back in the lineup, Williams will probably rejoin the Yankees Triple-A affiliate, the Scranton/Wilkes Barre RailRiders, once he returns from this injury. As the Yankees have a slight logjam in the outfield, putting Williams back in the minor leagues will allow him to get consistent playing time on a regular basis.
