Mark Teixeira eyes rehab assignment next week

Although there are questions whether or not New York Yankees first baseman Mark Teixeira will make a full return this season, he is targeting to make a start for the Trenton Thunder next Tuesday or Wednesday, as reported by Bryan Hoch.

Teixeira has missed the last 10 games with his most recent knee injury, which he suffered on June 3 in Baltimore. ย He has missed 16 games in total this season due to the current knee injury and previous neck spasms, which he has received a cortisone shot for.

Following Teixeira’s injury, Chris Parmelee had seemingly taken over the job at first. ย He played great on defense, hit .500 and added two home-runs and four RBI in six games prior to an injury of his own.

Since the injury to Parmelee, Rob Refsnyder has primarily played first base for the Yankees. Refsnyder is hitting .263 with no home-runs and six RBI on the season. ย For a guy that has never played first professionally before a couple of weeks ago, he’s playing calm, confident, and most importantly pretty well.

There isn’t a definite word on how long his rehab assignment would be, but Teixeira is hopeful to rejoin the Yankees next Friday.

The 36-year-old Teixeira has struggled this season, sporting a slashline of .180/.271/.263, adding three home-runs and 12 RBI.

With the potential for Teixeira needing season-ending knee surgery still lingering, it would be ideal for him to take time and figure things out, relax, and stop thinking about getting through these injuries as quickly as possible.
