After throwing just 12 pitches in last night’s ballgame, Nathan Eovaldi was forced to leave the game due to right elbow discomfort. With concern over the severity of the injury, the 26-year-old was sent back to New York by the team to undergo tests.

There is cause for concern regarding this injury, given Eovaldi’s history of elbow issues. In 2007 during his junior year of high school, the hard-throwing right hander underwent Tommy John surgery and missed the entire season. In 2015, Eovaldi’s elbow issues continued, as he was sidelined for the final month of the season with elbow inflammation.

Before landing on the disabled list last season, Eovaldi was arguably the Yankees best starting pitcher. Although he posted a 4.20 ERA over his 27 starts, the 26-year-old had a career-high and team best 14 wins.

Eovaldi has seen his struggles this season, and it’s possible that elbow trouble could factor into why he hasn’t been at the top of his game. Due to some mid-season struggles, Eovaldi was moved to the bullpen, where he made three relief appearances over a two week span. In 24 games this season (21 starts), Eovaldi is 9-8 with a 4.76 ERA.

This injury is definitely a concern for the Yankees, as they are hopeful it is nothing serious. With the team looking to make a possible late playoff push, losing Eovaldi for an extended period of time would be a tough loss for the Bronx Bombers.

The Bronx Pinstripes team will continue to update as more information comes along regarding Eovaldi’s injury.
