Confirmed: Dellin Betances Demoted to Trenton

Less than a year ago, Dellin Betances was in the Major Leagues. Now, he’s been bombed out of the International League and has been demoted to Trenton.

I didn’t even have time to write the article regarding a Twitter post I made an hour ago regarding Dellin Betances. Josh Norris of the Trentonian had broke a rumor that Betances, one of the Yankees top pitching prospects, would be demoted to Double-A Trenton in the near future. In fact, Norris reported that as of this morning, that was the plan. Then, C.C. Sabathia and Andy Pettitte both wound up injured, and it was unknown whether the Yankees would follow through with the plan to send Betances to Trenton.

As it turns out, that is still the plan. Once considered the second-best Yankees pitching prospect, Betances has been demoted to Trenton after a disastrous season which has included a 6.13 ERA and a 1.87 WHIP – the highest in both categories in the International League. Some have speculated that this may be part of the process which would shift him to the bullpen, but I doubt it. His future is almost certainly in the pen, but one organization source that I spoke to said that it’s still too early for that type of move.

Taking Betances’ roster spot in Scranton is Preston Claiborne. Claiborne, 24, was 2-2 with a 2.22 ERA and five saves in 48.1 innings with Trenton this year. He hasn’t allowed a run in his past fifteen appearances.
