Greg Bird named International League Player of the Week

One of the Yankees top prospects, first baseman Greg Bird, has been named International League Player of Week after having one of his best weeks of the season.

The 22-year-old hit .348 with a league-leading 10 runs batted in. Bird is highly regarded as the best hitter in the Yankees system and he has shown just that since his July 3 promotion to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. On August 5, Bird had his best game of the season, mashing a pair of two-run home runs as well as getting a double.

In the past week, Bird has eight hits, five of which have gone for extra base hits. Between Trenton and Scranton, Bird has 12 home runs, 23 doubles, and driven in 52 runs on the season. In 31 games with the Yankees Triple-A affiliate, Bird has raised his average from .258 with Trenton, to .295 with Scranton.

His numbers have improved with the promotion as he has matched his Double-A home run total in 18 less games for the Railriders. Β His slugging and on-base plus slugging percentages have both risen during his time at Triple-A.

Bird could see action with the Yankees when rosters expand in September. For now, Bird will look to continue his hot hitting for the first-place RailRiders.
