AAA: Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees
Austin Romine had his first multi-hit game since rejoining Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on August 8th, with a 2-for-4 performance at the plate. Romine, who has missed most of the season with a back injury, will try to have a hot August in hopes of securing a Major League call-up once the minor league season ends in September. Ramiro Pena, designated for assignment last week, reached base all four times, with an RBI single and three walks, one of which brought home another run. Brandon Laird had a multi-hit game as well, topping off his 2-for-4 performance by scoring twice. However, the real offensive hero was Kevin Russo, who had a bases-clearing double in the 8th inning which gave the Yankees what would turn out to be three very necessary insurance runs. On the mound, Mike O’Connor turned in another solid spot start, tossing 5 1/3 innings of one-run ball. O’Connor allowed just four hits while striking out five, but did not factor into the decision. That would go to Preston Claiborne, who pitched 1 1/3 innings of shutout baseball to earn his second victory since his promotion.

AA: Trenton Thunder
Vidal Nuno got knocked around last night as Trenton fell to the Reading Phillies 8-4. Nuno, who has been solid most of the season, had his worst outing since being promoted in May, allowing six runs (four earned) on nine hits in 5 2/3 innings. His biggest problem last night stemmed from being unable to keep the ball in the yard, as he allowed three home runs. Offensively, only Luke Murton and Adonis Garcia managed multiple hits, with Garcia scoring the team’s first run. David Adams showed a good bat as well, stroking an RBI double in the 5th inning, his only hit in four trips to the plate, while Jose Pirela had a terrible night, going 0-for-5 with a pair of errors in the field.

Low-A: Charleston RiverDogs
Charleston fell to Asheville 4-3 on Monday night as Nick Goody got touched up in the tenth inning, taking the second loss of his short professional career. Charleston led early, taking a 3-0 lead after two innings after Ali Castillo walked with the bases loaded and Cito Culver singled home an additional two runs as the next batter, but that was it for the Charleston offense. They failed to get a hit after their three-run second inning, with just a few runners reaching base on walks. The performance on the mound for the RiverDogs wasn’t bad at all – four pitchers combined for a total of twelve strikeouts, including six by starter Matt Bashore. He allowed just one hit and an unearned run in four innings of work. Brett Gerritse would give up two runs to Asheville before giving way to Ben Paullus, who tossed two scoreless innings.
