AAA: Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees
Adam Warren struggled to keep runners off the bases in 5 2/3 innings of work tonight, allowing two runs on nine hits and three walks. Warren also struck out five Charlotte batters. However, it was Ryota Igarashi who would take the loss after allowing a run (allowed by Juan Cedeno after Igarashi was replaced) on three hits in an inning of work. Chris Dickerson continued his hot streak at the plate, going 3-for-5 with a triple and a home run. He is now 6-for-11 in his last three games. Cole Garner and Kevin Russo also turned in multi-hit games, while newly-acquired Kosuke Fukudome hit his first home run as a Yankee.
AA: Trenton Thunder
Dellin Betances turned in another good performance tonight as he continues to show improved control in the Eastern League. The recently demoted Betances tossed six innings, allowing three runs on eight hits and just one walk. He struck out five and threw 61% of his pitches for strikes. Despite a strong showing, it was Kelvin Perez, not Betances, who would earn the win. Perez continued his lights out season with 2 2/3 scoreless innings, lowering his season ERA to 1.04 as he earned his fifth victory. Offensively, Trenton got started in the 6th inning, when Zoilo Almonte singled home Addison Maruszak to tie the game at one. From there, it was J.R. Murphy’s second home run of the year in the 7th, followed by an RBI double off the bat of Jose Pirela which made it 3-1 Thunder. After Binghamton scored three in the bottom half of the inning, Trenton roared back. Luke Murton hit his 20th home run in the 8th inning to tie up the game at four. Then in the 9th, it got very interesting. With the game tied at four, Trenton had runners on the corners with one out. It was then that the go-ahead run would score, but it wasn’t because of something Addison Maruszak did in the batter’s box. Instead, it was a balk that sent Yadil Mujica home on a balk, giving the Thunder a 5-4 lead and the eventual victory.
High-A: Tampa Yankees
Nik Turley looked like a top prospect on the mound tonight for Tampa, tossing six shutout innings of three-hit baseball. The big left-hander also struck out seven batters as the Yankees beat up on Jupiter 12-0 to give Turley his fifth win of the season. On offense, every player in the Tampa line-up recorded at least one hit, and Jose Mojica and Zach Wilson led the team recording three hits a piece. Mojica would also lead the team with three RBIs on the evening. A pair of very good outfield prospects, Mason Williams and Slade Heathcott, each recorded two hits and an RBI on the night.
Low-A: Charleston RiverDogs
Brett Gerritse had his best performance of the season, pitching six shutout innings against Greenville as the RiverDogs won 5-0. The 21 year old right-hander allowed just three hits while striking out six on the afternoon. The performance earned Gerritse his third win of the season. Rey Nunez would get Charleston on the board in the third inning with a two-run home run – his 5th of the season. Ben Gamel would do the damage next, with an RBI single in the 5th inning. He would score one batter later as Tyson Blaser blasted a double to right field. The RiverDogs’ final run would score when, with runners on the corner, Ali Castillo was picked off at first base, which allowed Cody Grice to score.
Rehab Update:
Joba Chamberlain: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 BB, 2 K. In four innings down on the Coast, Chamberlain has yet to allow a run. He’ll likely be bumped up to Charleston or Tampa to continue his rehab later this week.
Austin Romine: 1-2, 2B. Romine’s fourth rehab appearance saw him pop out to second base, lace a double to left field, and catch five innings behind the plate
Eduardo Nunez: 0-1. Nunez returned to game action for the first time as part of his rehab assignment, grounding out to first base and playing three innings in the field at shortstop.
