Scranton/Wilkes-Barre 6, Columbus 2
Ramon Ortiz had his best outing of the season tonight, tossing eight innings of two run ball for his second win of the season. Ortiz allowed just six hits and did not walk a batter while striking out four. Both runs were scored on solo home runs. Steve Pearce’s great season continued, going 2-for-4 with a walk and a run scored. Francisco Cervelli’s rebound from an early season slump continued as he went 1-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored. Brandon Laird and Kevin Russo both recorded a multi-hit game in the victory.
Trenton 3, Akron 2
The Thunder won tonight’s game, but suffered another big loss as OF Dan Brewer is likely to hit the disabled list after being absolutely crushed on a collision in short right field with Luke Murton tonight. Reports state that Brewer is currently at a local hospital with a dislocated finger. Murton was deemed to be okay, escaping with just a nasty cut on his nose. On the playing front, Vidal Nuno made his Double-A debut tonight on the mound, and provided a mixed bag of results over his four shutout innings of work. He allowed just two hits, but also allowed four walks. Ryan Flannery worked the 9th inning again, earning his sixth save of the season. Offensively, only Cody Johnson managed multiple hits, as he went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Luke Murton and Kevin Mahoney also knocked in runs for Trenton.
Tampa 3, Palm Beach 2
Caleb Cotham threw six solid innings tonight, allowing just one run on five hits as he lowered his season ERA to 1.50. Unfortunately for Cotham, he didn’t factor into the decision as the Yankees needed extra innings to win this one. Rigoberto Arrebato would record the win for the Yankees, with Mark Montgomery earning his seventh save of the season with a perfect 10th inning. Rob Segedin, playing third base tonight, extended his hitting streak to eleven games with a ground-rule double in the 9th inning. He would then come around to score and tie the game at two on Neil Medchill’s single. Medchill was 2-for-4 on the night before being lifted for pinch runner Jose Toussen. Toussen would then knock in the winning run an inning later with a perfectly placed bunt single.
Savannah 5, Charleston 3
The only Yankee affiliate to lose tonight, Charleston’s pitching fell apart in the eighth inning after a great performance by starter Bryan Mitchell, who allowed four hits and two runs (one earned) in five innings of work. After Mitchell, Wilton Rodriguez did his job with two shutout innings, passing the torch to Joel De La Cruz. At this point, the Charleston lead fell apart, as De La Cruz allowed three runs in the eighth and the RiverDogs couldn’t recover. Offensively, every single Charleston player had a hit on the evening. Cito Culver did the most damage, going 1-for-3 with a two-run double in the sixth inning. Gary Sanchez had a nice night at the plate as well, going 2-for-4 to boost his average to .308 on the season.
