Minors Wrap-Up: Murphy’s Bat Powers Tampa

J.R. Murphy’s home run last night led the Tampa Yankees past Daytona

AAA: Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees

Scranton couldn’t get going offensively, managing just four hits in a 4-2 loss to the Louisville Bats on Tuesday night. In fact, only Ronnier Mustelier was able to cobble together an extra-base hit. The offense struggled with runners in scoring position, going 0-for-7 on the evening and leaving seven on base. Adam Warren had turned in a quality start for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, tossing seven innings. He had allowed just three runs on seven hits, while striking out five. Unfortunately, the lack of offense hurt Warren, who dropped to 4-5 on the season.

AA: Trenton Thunder
It seems that nothing can stop Mikey O’Brien, who turned in another great performance for the Thunder. O’Brien threw six innings of one-run ball, allowing just four hits along the way. He also struck out four hitters, but did not factor into the decision. That would go to Ricky Orta, who threw two innings in his season debut and got the win. Ryan Flannery tossed a perfect 9th inning to record his sixth save of the season. Luke Murton was the big offensive star of the night, going 3-for-4 with his 11th home run of the season. Melky Mesa’s RBI single in the 8th inning is what won it for Trenton, who came out on top 3-2.

High-A: Tampa Yankees
J.R. Murphy broke a 2-2 tie last night in the sixth inning with a two-run home run to push the Tampa Yankees past the Daytona Cubs 4-2. Murphy, who was one of the Yankees representatives on the FSL All-Star team, also had a double and scored twice in his 2-for-4 effort. Fellow All-Star Rob Segedin was 2-for-4 with an RBI as well. One thing I still have not seen an answer for from last night is Nik Turley. He allowed just one hit, three walks, and struck out five before exiting after three innings. Turley has had blister problems in the past, and one has to wonder if that could have caused the short outing, but that is pure speculation at this point. After he left, Sean Black pitched two innings and got the win, while Branden Pinder had two shutout innings to record his third save.
