Scranton/Wilkes-Barre 9, Toledo 8
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre held off Toledo’s late inning charge tonight for a 9-8 victory. Francisco Cervelli, Steve Pearce, and Raymond Kruml all homered in the win, while the likes of Colin Curtis went 3-for-5 with an RBI and a pair of runs scored to help power the offense to victory. Manny Banuelos started for the Yankees, but lasted just four innings. He allowed five runs (sll in the third inning) on four hits and three walks, though he struck out five. Kevin Whelan was entertaining in the 9th, walking two and allowing a hit, but he managed to nail down his 10th save of the season.
Trenton 7, New Hampshire 1
The Thunder offense gave plenty of support to Mikey O’Brien in his Double-A debut, not that he needed it. O’Brien gave up just one run on three hits over seven innings pitched while striking out three New Hampshire hitters. Offensively, the home runs came off the bats of Corban Joseph and Cody Johnson to help power the Thunder. Johnson’s home run was his tenth of the season. Yadil Mujica went 2-for-4 with a double and a pair of runs batted in to do his part in the victory.
Charlotte 2, Tampa 0
Starting pitcher Nik Turley was pulled after just three innings tonight against Charlotte with another blister issue, forcing Kramer Snead into the game in relief. Before leaving, Turley would allow two runs on three hits – not a terrible outing, but one that Tampa couldn’t overcome even after Snead would toss four scoreless innings. The offense didn’t help much, mustering only three hits – off the bats of Rob Segedin, Neil Medchill, and J.R. Murphy.
Charleston 10, Rome 5
Charleston and Rome actually played two today, finishing a suspended game from earlier in the season. That ended with a 3-2 Rome victory in ten innings. In the scheduled game for today, it was the Francisco Arcia show for the RiverDogs. The backup to top prospect Gary Sanchez, Arcia went 4-for-4 with three doubles and three runs batted in. Despite being just 22 years old, Arcia has never been considered much of a prospect in a system that included Sanchez, J.R. Murphy, Austin Romine, and until January, Jesus Montero. In addition to Arcia, Ben Gamel came up big for Charleston tonight, going 3-for-4 with an RBI. Wilton Rodriguez started, and pitched decent through four innings – he allowed two runs on three hits and three walks. Pedro Guerra’s shutout inning in the fifth earned him the win, though Ben Paullus gave the RiverDogs a scare – he allowed three more runs over two innings, and still no one seems to know why Paullus and his 9.93 ERA are playing full season ball.
