AAA: Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre moved one win closer to winning the International League North title as they defeated Lehigh Valley 6-2 on Sunday afternoon. Justin Thomas turned in an excellent outing, tossing seven innings of two-run baseball. Thomas allowed just three hits in the outing while striking out five Lehigh Valley hitters, earning his second win of the season. Cory Wade came on in relief and pitched two scoreless innings to record his fifth save of the season. Ronnier Mustelier, Brandon Laird, and Kosuke Fukudome led the Yankees offense with two hits each. Laird and Fukudome also contributed two RBIs a piece. Melky Mesa also brought home a pair of runs in the ninth inning with a triple, his only hit of the game. With today’s victory, Scranton/Wilkes-Barre’s magic number is two with six games to play.
AA: Trenton Thunder
Brett Marshall struck out nine Akron hitters as Trenton moved past the Areos 3-2 on Sunday. Marshall, who did not factor into the decision, allowed two runs on five hits in six innings of work for the Thunder. After Marshall left, Mark Montgomery would strike out three in two scoreless innings to earn the win. Ryan Pope earned his sixth save with a scoreless ninth inning. At the plate, it was the Adonis Garcia show for Trenton. The Cuban prospect went 3-for-5 at the plate, winding up just a triple short of the cycle. Garcia hit his second home run since joining the Thunder, and brought home two of the team’s three runs. Rob Segedin also added his third home since his July promotion with a solo shot in the seventh inning.
Low-A: Charleston RiverDogs
Dante Bichette, Jr. hit a ninth inning single to score Ben Gamel and push Charleston past Lexington 5-4. Despite only going 2-for-2, Bichette reached base all five times he came to bat thanks to three walks. He also contributed two RBIs for the RiverDogs. In addition to Bichette, Ben Gamel and Cito Culver also had multi-hit games for Charleston. Eduardo Sosa also helped out at the plate, with a sixth inning home run off of Lexington pitcher Evan Grills. On the mound for Charleston was Scottie Allen, who allowed three runs on seven hits in four innings of work. One positive that came from Allen’s outing was the 6-0 strikeout-to-walk ratio. Fred Lewis pitched two scoreless innings, allowing just one hit and striking out three as he earned his seventh win of the season.
