Columbus 4, Scranton/Wilkes-Barre 1
Before the season, Ronnier Mustelier wasn’t even on the radar as a prospect. Now, at 27, the Cuban defector is arguably one of the best hitters on the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees. He went 1-for-4 today, but supplied the Yankees with their only run – a two-out, 9th inning blast. Mustelier is now hitting .339 with three home runs on the season. Kevin Russo also had a nice day out of the leadoff spot, going 2-for-4. Dellin Betances took the loss for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, dropping him to 2-4 on the season. Once again, Betances struggled with his control, allowing three more walks in just 4.2 innings.
Trenton 8, New Hampshire 3
It was Shaeffer Hall’s day to shine for Trenton, as the lefty threw 8.2 innings for the Thunder. Hall (4-4) allowed three runs on seven hits, with three strikeouts. All three of the runs scored by New Hampshire came via the long ball, so that goes to show that Hall’s outing was limited to just a few bad pitches. Corban Joseph led the bats at the plate yet again, going 2-for-5 with a pair of doubles and an RBIÂ to raise his average to .373 on the year. Leadoff man Abe Almonte went 2-for-5 as well, though his day included his 15th steal of the season and scoring twice. Dan Brewer also contributed offensively with his first home run of the season.
Tampa 3, Charlotte 2
Rob Segedin extended his hitting streak to nine games on Sunday with a double to lead off the 9th inning, then came around to score the game-winning run on a sharp single to right field by Eduardo Sosa. Tyson Blaser, who has been on a season-long hot streak, went 1-for-3 with an RBI ground-rule double. He’s now hitting a whopping .375 on the season. Sean Black had a phenominal outing for Tampa, throwing five innings while allowing just one run on two hits. However, it was standout reliever Mark Montgomery who stole the show on the pitching rubber. Montgomery threw two perfect innings to secure the win. Nothing out of the ordinary, right? Guess again. Montgomery struck out all six batters he faced, and now has struck out 34 batters in 20.2 innings this season — an unbelievable 14.8 strikeouts per nine innings.
Charleston 6, Rome 1
Evan Rutckyj made his Charleston debut today in grand fashion, tossing five scoreless innings. Rutckyj allowed just two hits while striking out eight Rome hitters. At just 20 years old, the former 16th round pick has the look of a pitcher who could be something special. The RiverDogs ran early and often today, racking up six steals, including two each for Tyler Austin and Cito Culver. Francisco Arcia went 1-for-2Â with a walk, and scored both times he reached base, while fellow catcher Gary Sanchez went 1-for-3 with an RBI double.
