AAA: Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre’s offense exploded on Monday night, turning in eighteen hits as they defeated Charlotte by a score of 14-2. Every Yankee in the lineup except catcher Gustavo Molina had at least one hit, with Jack Cust, Cole Garner, and Brandon Laird all homering on the evening. Kosuke Fukudome made his debut with the team, starting in right field and recording three hits in five trips to the plate. Most impressive was Ramiro Pena, who went 4-for-5 out of the ninth slot in the lineup. The Yankees’ ace, Ramon Ortiz, took to the mound and earned his seventh win of the season with six innings of work. Ortiz allowed two runs on six hits while striking out five hitters.
AA: Trenton Thunder
Rob Segedin has struggled since joining the Thunder on July 4th, but came through in a big way last night. The 23-year old’s lone hit was an RBI single in the 8th inning which gave Trenton the 6-5 lead which they would hold onto for the victory. Trenton’s bats were going on all cylinders today, with Addison Maruszak and Zoilo Almonte hitting back-to-back home runs in the 4th inning. Two innings later, Melky Mesa joined the party as well, blasting his 12th home run of the season. All three players had a multi-hit game. On the mound, Mikey O’Brien returned from the disabled list to pitch four innings, allowing four runs (three earned) on five hits. O’Brien would strike out three. Graham Stoneburner got his first win of the season for Trenton, tossing three innings while allowing just one run.
High-A: Tampa Yankees
Tampa played two on Monday against Jupiter, and saw the pitching staff throw shutouts in both games as they won each 1-0. In the first game, Matt Tracy continued his breakout season with 5.2 innings of two-hit ball, earning his fourth win of the season before giving way to All-Star closer Mark Montgomery. Montgomery would record the final four outs for his 14th save of the season. Tampa managed just two hits of their own in the first game. In the nightcap, Aaron Dott, Manny Barreda and Branden Pinder combined for a seven-inning shutout, with Barreda earning his fifth win of the season. Tampa’s lone run in the second game was driven in when Kyle Roller blasted a ground-rule double to left field, scoring Ramon Flores.
Class A: Charleston RiverDogs
Charleston gave up one in the ninth as they dropped to the Greenville Drive last night 3-2. Matt Bashore had started for the Riverdogs, holding Greenville to just two runs on five hits over five innings of work. He had three strikeouts on the day. For Nick Goody, he may have taken the loss, but it was far from a bad performance. Five of the six outs recorded by Goody came by way of strikeout, and he allowed just the two hits that resulted in the winning run. Offensively, it was Tyson Blaser who contributed a multi-hit game, while CF Ben Gamel and RF Cody Grice drove in the Riverdogs’ two runs.
