Minors Wrap-Up: Trenton Walks Off in Eleven

Rob Segedin scored the winning run in the 11th inning on a Jose Pirela sacrifice fly

AA: Trenton Thunder
Rob Segedin scored twice, including the game-winning run in the 11th inning on Wednesday night as Trenton scooted past Altoona 4-3. However, that opportunity wouldn’t have even been possible had it not been for Kevin Mahoney, who blasted a two-run home run in the eighth inning to tie the game up at three. Jose Pirela, who is quickly establishing himself as one of the better middle infield prospects in the organization, went 2-for-4 with the game-winning RBI on a sacrifice fly, raising his batting average on the year to .324. Addison Maruszak and Luke Murton also had two hits apiece. Starting pitcher Mikey O’Brien went five innings, allowing two runs on five hits while striking out four. However, most impressive on the mound was Mark Montgomery. In two perfect innings last night, he completely overmatched Altoona, striking out four hitters along the way. Video taken of the outing by the Hunterdon County Democrat’s Mike Ashmore can be found here.

High-A: Tampa Yankees
Slade Heathcott brought home three of Tampa’s six runs last night, as the Yankees beat Charlotte 6-1. Heathcott also would lead the team in hits, going 3-for-4 at the plate with a double and a home run. Jose Toussen also did his part to push Tampa along, with two hits and a pair of RBI on the evening. Ramon Flores, Zach Wilson, and Adonis Garcia all put together multi-hit evenings for the Yankees as well. Nik Turley turned in five shutout innings, striking out five hitters along the way as he earned his seventh win of the season. Manny Barreda and Tom Kahnle would finish the game off after that, with Kahnle allowing the only run of the game.

Low-A: Charleston RiverDogs
Charleston couldn’t overcome three runs by Greenville in the second inning, and wound up losing by a score of 3-2. Ben Gamel, Rey Nunez, and Nick McCoy led Charleston in hits with two apiece, with Gamel having one of the team’s RBIs. The other came off the bat of Ali Castillo, who hit a sixth inning solo home run. Matt Bashore got the start for the RiverDogs, going five innings while allowing three runs on five hits while striking out four. He would be charged with the loss, dropping his record on the season to 1-4. After Bashore left, Ben Paullus shocked the world by contributing three shutout innings. His ERA on the year is now down to a resounding 6.80.
