Severino, Judge on Top-50 prospect list

Baseball America released its annual midseason top-50 prospect list and two Yankee farmhands appear in the top 17.

Outfielder Aaron Judge and right-hander Luis Severino appeared at number 13 and 17, respectively.

Severino appeared on the list in 2014 as the 34th best prospect. Entering 2015, Severino lost a spot in the rankings. He came into the year the 35th best prospect, while Judge was ranked 53, according to Baseball America.

The Yankees top prospects have made giant leaps in the rankings thanks in large part to their solid starts to the season.

Both Severino and Judge have climbed through the minor leagues and both are with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

While with the Railriders, Severino has posted a 4-0 record with a 1.96 earned run average. His combined numbers with Double- and Triple-A are 6-2 with a 2.61 ERA. He has combined for 76 strikeouts in 79.1 innings.

Judge has also played pretty well while with the Railriders. He has hit .268/.358/.357. However, his power numbers have disappeared in Triple-A. He has hit only one home run in 15 games. While in Double-A to begin the season, Judge hit 12 home runs in 63 games. He hit .284 in Trenton.

Severino and Judge are on the fast track to the majors, however, the Yankees seem adamant about keeping Judge in the minors for the season and have him fight for a spot in 2016.

But with the struggles of CC Sabathia and other members of the Yankee rotation, Severino may get a chance come September to prove he is worthy of a starting role. Severino has the chance to help the Yankees reach the postseason for the first time since 2013.
