The Staten Island Yankees are rebranding and you can help

Staten Island has donned the Yankees signature pinstripes and name since their onset 17 years ago. In 2017, the team looks to change that by taking on its own identity.

It was announced Monday that the Staten Island Yankees will be rebranding and changing the team’s name.  How are they doing that?  By asking you, the fans and the internet to submit your ideas for the new name at the team’s Web site.

The team will remain the Class A Short Season affiliate of the New York Yankees where they have won six New York-Penn League championships.

“This ballpark is a jewel located in a passionate community in the best setting in sports.  The Staten Island community is proud to have our team here, and we believe rebranding the team to something more specific will make this local brand become more popular here, and ultimately internationally.  We are very proud to be Yankees, but equally proud to be part of this community,” said Team President and Operator Partner Will Smith.

Fans can begin making their submissions for the team’s new identity, including a name suggestion and an explanation of the name’s significance to Staten Island.  Submissions will be accepted until July 5, 2016.

The team has indicated that the top six choices that best represent the borough will be entered into a contest to vote for Staten Island’s new team name.
