In order to make room for Vernon Wells on the 40-man roster, the Yankees have released infielder David Adams, according to WFAN’s Sweeny Murti.
Adams, 25, was originally drafted by the Tigers in 2005 but didn’t sign. In 2008, the Yankees took him in the third round. Last year, Adams hit .306 with 8 homers and 48 RBIs in 86 games with Double A Trenton. Overall in his five years in the minors, Adams owns a .295 BA with a .378 OBP.
Although he put up good numbers in the Yankees’ system, he was never fully considered to take over for the injured Alex Rodriguez, thanks in part to a back injury he suffered very early on in Spring Training. Adams also suffered a broken ankle in May of ’10 that kept him out of action for most of ’11. He was on track to possibly start this season in Triple A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, but unfortunately, he received the short end of a needed roster move.
