Report: Yankees and Marlins progressing towards Giancarlo Stanton deal

The Giancarlo Stanton sweepstakes is starting to heat up again, and the New York Yankees are right in the middle of the rumors.

On Friday evening, a Twitter account which is believed to belong to former Yankee Jim Leyritz tweeted that Stanton was officially traded to the Bronx Bombers. Although the account is not verified, there is reason to believe the account truly belongs to Leyritz. The account is followed by numerous former teammates and members of the media, including David Cone and WFAN’s Sweeny Murti.

A little while later, more rumors started to surface:

Multiple beat writers confirmed that the Yankees are currently in trade talks with the Marlins for Stanton. According to Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports, the Marlins are talking about possible deals with other clubs, but none are considered serious at this time.

Trading Stanton will be a complicated process for the Marlins. Due to his no-trade clause and large contract, the Marlins will have to find a suitor that Stanton is willing to play for and has the funds necessary to accommodate his pay.

However, the Yankees may just be the perfect trade partner for the Marlins as they are looking to rebuild.

Recently, Stanton told the Marlins that he would be willing to approve a trade to the Yankees. The Bronx Bombers are also in a position where they can accommodate his salary if the Marlins agree to take some big contracts off their hands.

A handful of Yankees major league players are believed to be involved in the trade discussions. So far, Starlin Castro, Jacoby Ellsbury, Clint Frazier, Brett Gardner and Jordan Montgomery are some of the names that have floated around in multiple reports.

One huge hurdle for the Yankees might be in terms of Ellsbury’s no-trade clause. Ellsbury is believed to want to stay in New York, and may be hesitant to approve a trade to another club. According to MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand, Ellsbury has not been asked to waive his no-trade clause as of yet.

Along with the veterans being discussed, it is believed that some prospects would also be included in any potential deal. The Yankees might have the upper-hand in terms of prospects, as they have a deep farm system that the Marlins have a lot of knowledge on.

Gary Denbo, who served as the Yankees Vice President of Player Development, is currently working for the Marlins. Denbo has as good of an understanding of the Yankees farm system as anyone, and could have his eye on potential players that could help the rebuild in Miami.

Top prospects such as Gleyber Torres are not expected to be involved in any potential trade. However, players such as Chance Adams and Miguel Andujar could possibly be in play.

As the rumors continue to heat up, the Bronx Pinstripes team will continue to provide all the latest updates surrounding the Giancarlo Stanton sweepstakes.
