A-Rod cleared, rehab assignment begins July 2

Alex Rodriguez, following a week of controversy and headlines, will finally begin his rehab assignment after being cleared by doctors authorized by the New York Yankees.

A-Rod will play in a minimum of three innings at third base on Tuesday for Single-A Charleston, according to beat writer Bryan Hoch. Rodriguez will work his way up to playing a full nine innings over the course of his rehab.

Last week, A-Rod made headlines after sending out a tweet in which he claimed to be cleared for rehab games by his surgeon. The tweet angered GM Brian Cashman because A-Rod had not been cleared by team doctors, the ultimate decision makers. Since then, there’s been wide speculation on what A-Rod plans to do in the future with regards to the remaining $114 mil on his contract.

As the Yankees’ offense continues to struggle, they are desperately searching for a right-handed bat. If all goes well with his rehab, A-Rod would be a welcome addition to an anemic lineup. He’s expected to return just after the All-Star break in mid-July.
