Alex Rodriguez shares own thoughts on David Ortiz’s retirement, legacy

Yankees instructor and interim Fox Sports analyst Alex Rodriguez had some kindhearted words for Red Sox slugger David Ortiz on Monday night.

The 40-year-old designated hitter went 0-1 with two walks in Boston’s 4-3 season-ending ALDS loss to the Cleveland Indians at Fenway Park on Monday, officially marking the end of Ortiz’s 20-year career.

Here is what Rodriguez said on Fox Sports:

“Big Papi is a megastar. Not only here domestically, but all over the world. He’s done an incredible job with the Red Sox. He’s won three championships. What he’s meant on the field, off the field for the community in Boston. What he’s done back in our homeland (of) the Dominican Republic. He’s a guy that we need to have around the game for the next 40 years.”

Ortiz, who played 14 seasons with the Red Sox and six seasons with the Minnesota Twins, finished with 541 home runs, 2,472 hits, 1,768 RBI and a lifetime .286 batting average. He also led the league in doubles (48), RBI (127), and slugging percentage (.620) this season.
