The Yankees have called up righty pitcher Dellin Betances to add another arm to the pen, according to Daniel Barbarisi of the Wall Street Journal. No corresponding move has been made yet, but chances are Brett Marshall will be sent down since he threw over 100 pitches last night in mop-up duty.
Betances, 25, was once considered one of the Yankees’ top pitching prospects. Standing at 6’8″ and 260 lbs and part of the “Killer B’s” (the other being Manny Banuelos), Betances was supposed to develop into a front-end starter. He made his major league debut in 2011 with the Yanks against the Rays, appearing in two games and registering a 6.75 ERA.
After being sent down, Betances struggled with his command and injuries. He was recently scratched from his last start with Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and placed in the bullpen because the organization wanted to get him some reps in relief. Now, he will get the chance to come out of the pen with the big league club.
Before getting the call, Betances appeared in eight games (six starts) this season with Scranton and went 3-2 with a 5.40 ERA. He walked 17 in 28.1 innings.
