Mitchell was making a spot start on Monday night, as the Yankees hoped to give their pitchers in the starting rotation an extra day of rest before their next outing. The Yankees were hoping Mitchell could give them a few innings against the Minnesota Twins, but the injury forced him to leave the game early.
In the second inning, former Yankee Eduardo Nunez hit a line drive right back at Mitchell, who was unable to get out of the way in time. The ball deflected off of his head area and ricocheted into centerfield, leaving Mitchell laying near the mound with blood gushing down his face.
The 24-year-old was rushed to NY Presbyterian Hospital, where the diagnosis of a small nasal fracture was determined. Mitchell was released from the hospital, but will be monitored by the team’s doctors overnight through tomorrow for any concussion symptoms.
As of right now, it is unclear as to how long Mitchell will be sidelined due to the injury. Luckily, the injury doesn’t appear to be as severe as many thought it was as the incident occurred, and hopefully Mitchell has a speedy recovery from it.
