Bryan Mitchell to start Monday against the Minnesota Twins

The New York Yankees announced that Bryan Mitchell will start Monday’s series opener against the Minnesota Twins.

Mitchell was called up prior to Sunday’s doubleheader against the Boston Red Sox, and was scheduled to start the first game. After Saturday’s 16-inning contest, the club elected to start CC Sabathia instead, keeping Mitchell available in the bullpen as a long reliever.

The 26-year-old has pitched as a starter for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre this season. In nine starts, Mitchell has posted a 2-2 record with a 3.60 ERA. In his time in the big leagues this season, Mitchell has made all his appearances as a reliever. The right-hander has a 1-1 record with a 5.06 ERA in 16 innings of work.

With the news that Michael Pineda is out for the season, the Yankees have a hole in their rotation that they need to fill. If Mitchell pitches well, it’s possible that the 26-year-old could find a role on the big league roster for the remainder of the season.

The Bronx Bombers are set to continue their 11-game road trip against the Minnesota Twins at Target Field. Monday’s first pitch is scheduled for 8:10 EST.
