Cervelli suspended 50 games

Lost in the Alex Rodriguez fallout from the Biogenesis scandal is another Yankee facing suspension: Francisco Cervelli.

The 27-year-old catcher has been suspended 50 games for violating the league’s Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program, the penalty for a first-time offense. FOX Sports broke the news and released the names of those involved earlier this afternoon.

In spring training, Cervelli admitted to meeting with Tony Bosch, the founder of the now defunct Miami-area “anti-aging” clinic, once in 2011. Cervelli, who was rehabbing a broken foot at the time,  was given supplements by Bosch that he says were not banned by MLB. He claims he only took what was given to him to recover from the injury.

After starting this season on a good note, Cervelli suffered a broken hand and subsequent elbow problem and has been sidelined since April. Recently, GM Brian Cashman said that it looks doubtful that Cervelli will return to the field in 2013. He should be ready to go for spring training next season.

Former Met top prospect and current Yankee minor leaguer Fernando Martinez has been suspended 50-games as well. All players are expected to accept the suspensions with the exception of Alex Rodriguez. Official announcements will be made this afternoon.
