Chris Young to sign with rival Red Sox

When the Yankees acquired outfielder Aaron Hicks it all but signified the end of Chris Young‘s tenure in the Bronx. Young has now defected to the dark side, agreeing to a multi-year deal, pending a physical, with the Boston Red Sox according to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports.

Young fills a need for the Sox, who were looking for a veteran right-handed OF bat. Young provides protection against Jackie Bradley Jr. and Rusney Castillo – two guys who have yet to really prove themselves to be everyday players. Young also adds depth should the Sox want to trade away an outfielder for starting pitching, an area Boston needs to heavily improve.

Young, 32, was signed as a free agent by the Yankees in August of 2014 after being released by the Mets. He hit .282/.354/.521 with three homers and 10 RBI the rest of that year, and re-signed with the Yanks forΒ one year at $2.5M. He hit .252 with a .773 OPS in 356 plate appearances this past season, adding 14 homers and 42 RBI. He slashed /.327/.397/.575 against lefties in 181 PA’s making him a valuable asset off the bench to Joe Girardi.

Against lefties and with the enticing green monster out in left field, Young seems to be tailor-made for Fenway.
