Cole Figueroa called-up, replaces Pirela

The Yankees have called-up minor league infielder Cole Figueroa in conjunction with Jose Pirela being sent down.

The Yankees also announce that they have designated outfielder Taylor Dugas for assignment.

Figueroa has played 77 games for the Yankees affiliate Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Railriders this season. He has hit .317/.372/.415. It should come as no surprise that Figueroa is getting an opportunity. In his last 49 games he has hit .386/.428/.524/.952 which ranks him among International Leagues’ best in those categories.

Pirela has struggled while with the Yankees. He made two costly errors in a loss on Sunday and has hit a meager .212 in 70 plate appearances. Pirela was looked at as a possible replacement for Stephen Drew at second base but has not lived up to the Yankees expectations.

Many thought that the Yankees were sending Chase Headley to the disabled list as he was scratched from his start in Wednesday’s game due to calf injury. But reports are that Headley is doing much better and Girardi is hopeful he can play this weekend in Boston.

Brendan Ryan will play a two-game rehab assignment starting today then the Yankees will decide on further moves.
