DL stint likely for Youkilis

Although the MRI results on third baseman Kevin Youkilis’ lower back came back negative, the Yankees will still likely place him on the disabled list, according to CBS Sports’ John Heyman.

Youkilis, 34, missed six straight games with lingering back issues before returning to the lineup on April 27 when he went 0-for-3 with a run scored; Youkilis was held out of the lineup on Sunday and yesterday, therefore, the Yankees can only backdate the DL stint to Sunday.

The former All-Star is hitting .266 with two homers and seven RBIs in 17 games. Youk has had a history of back issues throughout his career, even admitting that this recent injury is nothing new to him. The MRI showed no changes in the back, so Youkilis will just need extended rest before taking the field again.

According to Heyman, Youk will receive an epidural shot to help with the stiffness and pain. The Yankees would likely call up another infielder to go along with Jayson Nix. David Adams has been the name floating around.
