Eduardo Nunez placed on DL

The Yankees have announced that shortstop Eduardo Nunez will be placed on the disabled list with a rib cage injury. The move is retroactive to May 6.

Nunez had resumed swinging a bat but still said he felt something in the rib cage area. Instead of just having him sit, the Yankees placed him on the DL in order to gain another roster spot. Alberto Gonzalez, who was acquired from the Cubs a few days ago, has been called up. In order to make room for him on the 40-man roster, Mark Teixeira was moved to the 60-day DL – he is still on track to return in June. Jayson Nix will continue to start at short.

In other injury news, Curtis Granderson went 2-for-4 in his latest rehab game with Scranton/Wilkes Barre. He could rejoin the team as early as Tuesday, when the Bombers return home to face the Seattle Mariners.
