Nathan Eovaldi undergoes Tommy John Surgery to repair elbow

The Yankees announced on Friday afternoon that pitcher Nathan Eovaldi underwent his second Tommy John surgery, in addition to having his right flexor tendon repaired, according to YES Network.

The surgery, which was preformed at New York-Presbyterian Hospital by Yankees Head Team Physician Dr. Christopher Ahmad, went as planned, with Eovaldi not expected to pitch again until the 2018 season.

“I’m going to go ahead and get both surgeries,” Eovaldi said during his announcement.  “I tore my flexor tendon off the bone and partially damaged by UCL.  Going back to the start before Boston, I had general soreness, nothing really to worry about.  It was really just that day, trying to play catch out there I felt like I couldn’t let my fastball go and if I did something bad would happen.”

Eovaldi, 26, was diagnosed with a torn right flexor tendon and partial UCL tear on Tuesday, and ended the 2016 season with a 4.76 ERA and 9-8 record in 21 starts. It is the second Tommy John surgery of Eovaldi’s career.
