Five Yankees named to the American League All Star team

The New York Yankees will be well-represented at the MLB All Star Game.

On Sunday night, Major League Baseball announced the rosters for the game, which will take place on July 11 at Marlins Park in Miami. Five Yankees were selected, which is the most since the organization sent eight players to the 2011 Midsummer Classic.

The Baby Bombers movement is ongoing in the Bronx, and the selections prove that notion. Of the team’s All-Stars, all five are under the age of 30-years-old.

With his 4,488,702 votes, Aaron Judge is the American League’s top vote getter, and the only Yankee who will be starting in the game.

Judge will be making his first All-Star Game appearance. He will become the third Yankees rookie to start an All Star Game, joining Joe DiMaggio and Hideki Matsui.

The 25-year-old is the talk of the town, and his selection to the game is well-deserved. He currently leads the American League in the following offensive categories.

Batting Average
Home Runs
Runs Batted In
Runs
Total Bases
On-Base Percentage
On-Base Plus Slugging
Slugging Percentage
Walks

In 77 games this season, Judge has posted a slash line of .325/.448/.686. He has been asked to participate in the MLB Home Run Derby, but has not yet decided if he will compete.

Although he missed almost a month of the season due to injury, Gary Sanchez will also make his first All-Star Game appearance this season.

Sanchez, 24, joins Thurman Munson and Yogi Berra as the only Yankees’ catchers to be selected as All-Stars at age 24-or-younger.

In 50 games this season, Sanchez has posted a slash line of .283/.371/.524. Since he was called up last season, he has been an offensive force in the middle of the lineup. He will provide backup in the game for Salvador Perez, who was selected as the American League starter behind the plate.

Sanchez was also asked to participate in the Home Run Derby. The 24-year-old has not yet made a decision on whether or not he will compete.

Starlin Castro was selected for his fourth All-Star Game, which will be a little different than his previous three selections.

This selection marks the first time that the 27-year-old will be on the American League roster. His previous three selections came when he was a member of the Chicago Cubs. As a converted second baseman, this is also the first time he is selected as an All-Star at the position.

Although he is currently sidelined due to injury, Castro was having a tremendous first half of the season. In 73 games, he has posted a slash line of .313/.348/.486.

Along with the organizations’s three position player selections, the Yankees also had two pitchers named to the American League roster.

For the first time, Luis Severino will be making an All-Star Game appearance

Severino is the first Yankee starter to be selected as an All-Star since Masahiro Tanaka in 2014. In 15 starts, the 23-year-old is 5-3 with a 3.15 ERA, and has struck out 107 batters in 94.1 innings pitched.

After struggling mightily during the 2016 season, Severino has definitely had a bounce-back season. The Yankees are hopeful that he can continue to pitch at a high level.

All-Star Games are becoming a common trend for reliever Dellin Betances.

For the fourth consecutive season, Betances will be coming out of the American League bullpen for the All-Star Game. He joins Joe DiMaggio as the only Yankees to ever be selected as an All-Star in each of their first four full seasons.

Along with some elite Yankee company, only four pitchers in baseball have been selected as All-Stars in each of the past four seasons. Those pitchers are Clayton Kershaw, Chris Sale and Max Scherzer. That’s some really impressive company!

Betances has been a valuable asset for the Yankees’ bullpen. In 29 games, he has posted a 3.15 ERA, and has struck out 48 batters in just 26 innings pitched. The 29-year-old also has 6 saves, as he filled in as the team’s closer when Aroldis Chapman was sidelined due to injury.

Along with the five Yankees selected to the team, it is possible that another Bomber could make the trip to Miami.

Shortstop Didi Gregorius was placed on the AL Final Vote Ballot. Fans can vote for Didi in hopes of sending him to this year’s All-Star Game.

By using the hashtag #SirDidi4Sure on Twitter and by going to this link, you can help send Didi to Miami. Voting ends Thursday, July 6, at 4:00 EST, so make sure you cast your votes!
